We live in a world that often conditions us to attack ourselves in a variety of ways.
We’re often tempted to live in a perpetual mode of self-judgment, self-betrayal, or self-criticism… diminishing who we are and our inherent value.
Living in this kind of state is Soul-draining and keeps you separate from your Highest, Most Brilliant, Most Loving Self.
Some forms of self-attack are obvious, while others are more insidious and subtle.
Here are some ways in which self-attack may show up in your life:
- Berating yourself with negative/critical self-talk (such as “you’re stupid/ugly/not good enough”)
- Setting impossible standards and demanding perfection of yourself
- Not fully acknowledging your achievements and life experience – or convincing yourself these are never enough
- Saying YES to someone or something, when you really want and need to say NO
- Harshly comparing yourself to others
- Pushing beyond the limits of your body, or expecting your body to be on the go/be productive at all times
- Giving up your opinions, preferences, desires, and purpose to accommodate others
- Discounting or minimizing your intuitive & spiritual gifts
All of these forms of self-attack have been “normalized” in the culture I live in, where productivity and external accomplishment are prioritized above spiritual, emotional, and even physical well-being.
Self-criticism and being harsh on oneself (or putting oneself down) have also been normalized in this culture, for far too long.
So – what’s the solution?
How do we set down these learned patterns of self-attack and begin loving ourselves unconditionally?
For me, the answer has been to consciously shift to a state of self-empathy.
This is, as you can imagine, the OPPOSITE of self-attack.
Self-empathy means being attuned to yourself… being deeply in touch with yourself and your needs, and honoring those needs as they arise moment by moment.
To further explore this idea of self-empathy and how you can implement it in your life, listen to my latest podcast episode here:
Inner Work 225: Shifting from self-attack to self-empathy
Practicing self-empathy – and setting down the weapons we’ve used to attack ourselves in the past – can truly shift your whole frequency… which will shift your reality… which will shift the whole world.
Let me know how this one lands with you!
With love,
Josephine
